‘Dancing with Morpheus’ Axelle, New York, 2 Nov – 1 Dec

Beth Studio

Beth Carter is thrilled to be exhibiting new sculpture and drawings in a solo exhibition at Axelle Fine Arts Galerie, Soho, New York.

Having relocated to Brooklyn to prepare for this show, Beth has produced new bronze sculptures that range from life-size figures down to small more intimately scaled pieces which will be shown alongside her new large-scale monochrome charcoal and colour pastel drawings. Serving as a perfect allegory for this powerful new body of work, the title of the exhibition “Dancing with Morpheus” refers to the Greek god of dreams and leader of the Oneiroi (winged spirits of dreams). In her new figures Carter intuitively manifests her fascination with themes of transformation, half-states, hybrids and duality with her characteristic sense of playfulness and foreboding.

Exhibition runs 2nd Nov-1st Dec 2013
Opening Reception Sat, Nov. 2

bo.lee gallery ‘Lucid’, Clerkenwell Gallery, 4 – 14 Sep

“bo.lee gallery considers a fleeting moment between dreaming and waking where reality is suspended between the conscious and the unconscious and sensation is lost to the mind’s perception. Abstracted musings give way to darker forces that threaten to immerse us in unwanted memories; we rally between the dark and light to establish equilibrium and find ourselves doubting that which we know to be true.

Sarah Ball, Beth Carter, Tom Chambers, Patrick Haines, Allan Martin, Anouk Mercier, Gill Rocca, Jane Smith, Erik Sommer, Rachel Ann Stevenson and Sue Williams A’Court come together to examine a dream-like state consumed by fragmented memories. The surreal and the real jostle for pre-eminence as allegory, identity, faith and perception are brought into question and their contrasting sense of self is revealed. Paintings, photography, illustration and sculpture expose a luminous realm that we all must cross…”

View Art Gallery, Summer Salon, 11 Jul – 25 Aug

SummerSalon1

“We love the Summer. Every year in July and August we experiment with our curating and for the only exhibition of the year we are themeless. The Summer Salon exhibitions give us the opportunity to try out new artists, new work, new styles, and keep it fast moving. Unlike other exhibitions, if a piece sells then we remove it straight away and replace it with something new. Similarly, we may just decide to randomly introduce new work or another artist. Sometimes this is a straight swap and sometimes it means we end up moving things about and re-hanging the whole show. Playtime for the curators! … So far, Summer Salon 2013 promises to be full of bright colours and high impact aesthetic quality underpinned by layers of ‘thought’. But of course that may change after the first week!”
